Let Me 'Splain.

I was one of those peeps who kind of subconsciously thought that blogging advertisements (say it the British way-- it's so much cooler) were, kind of, "selling out."

Don't be mad. Like I said: subconsciously. And I've never thought that about someone else. Just me.

So perhaps you noticed a little flashing ad on the side of thee ole bloggity blog--

Let me 'splain.

No, there is too much: let me sum up.

One day, as I drove away with another $100 worth of products at Lowe's, I felt super duper guilty. Again. Just like this weekend's $100 worth of lumber booty (cough):

guilty.

I said to myself:

"Self, Lowe's should sponsor you."

Lowe's, you should sponsor me. You have no idea who I am, and you never will. BUT YOU SHOULD.

But I digress.

I thought-- "man-- my crazy ideas cost me a lot of moolah. I wish I could. . . somehow. . . offset that a bit."

And you know, that little ad on the right? It'll probably bring a good, decent, chunk of change at the end of the month. Possibly 50 cents or so. Maybe 60 cents.

But it's 50 cents less guilt. Or 50 cents more lumber. I'm a glass is half full kinda gal.

So does that make me a sellout? Are you disappointed? Would you judge me? Do you mind? Is this enough questions for you???

Thanks for listening. And answering.

Nothing wrong with making extra cash!
You will NEVER be a sell out!! You are to awesome for that!!

There is a difference between simple ads on the side and keeping the blog real.. VS... ads everywhere, giveaways every day, and no more tutorials (like there used to be)

YOU, MY FAVE BLOGGER - will keep it real!!

I don't think it's selling out at all!! I don't get why anyone would take offense - how is it a bad thing to make money from something you spend a ton of time doing? It's not like you're going to endorse products you don't even like, they're just unobtrusive ads that people can ignore if they so please, that don't change the content or awesomeness of your blog posts, and that might enable you to do more fabulous projects to share with us (and even put a pair of shoes on one of your kid's feet)! I say rock on lady!

You go girl! Cash in when you can. I'm jealous but will still read, laugh, and enjoy your blog.

We all love capitalism.

And your blog.

May you earn 70 cents.

It's your blog! Do whatever the heck you want. I don't think anyone is going to mind, at all!

I never thought it was for me either, but if I ever change my mind then I will do it too. I think a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. I wonder if BH photo will sponsor me and give me a Canon 5D Mark II.............. Oh how I wish.

You gotta do what you gotta do...it's no sell out! I'll click on the ad now, just to try and bump it up to 70 cents!:-)

Not a sell out at all!

Do what you gotta do to offset that guilt. I work, but I also do karate. I feel super duper guilty, but I offset it by babysitting two days a week. It stinks, but it pays off my karate debt, so that I can kick and punch without guilt! More power to ya sister!

hah I dont think you're a sellout. AND I think Lowes SHOULD sponsor you. You make me think I could make stuff... if I had tools... and skills.

Gosh no! Nobody minds. Do it. I've gone as far as seeking out vendors that I need something from and asking them to exchange product for marketing. It worked too! Once. It worked once. But I am still holding out for a new water filter system! And praying.

You crazy woman! You are my absolutely favorite blog and I get excited every day hoping that you will have some crazy, hair brained idea to share. Of course you should have advertising on your blog, you need to feed your children, pay your mortgage, pay your bills and keep buying random pieces of wood to make my life complete! Will you stop feeling guilty, try to get some more advertsers and keep nailing, drilling, sanding and painting to your hearts content. If not for you but for me? Oh yeah, you also dont want to make your husbands life more stressful so that is another reason to have adveertisements (pronounced in a britsh voice)

You know, I've been thinking about doing this but just couldn't commit to it. I would be interested in what route you took (adsense or something else). Not a sell out and I think you should actually contact Home Depot directly and ask them to sponsor you or at least advertise on your blog.

As long as you keep me laughing my butt off, I don't care HOW many ads you have!!! ;)

If you can make money doing what you do, go for it! All my favorite bloggers have ads, and it doesn't bother me at all. I can click on them if I want, and ignore them if I want!

Do it!!! I hope you make boat loads!

I'd never accuse you of selling out!

Don't worry, I've kinda been thinking about jumping on the advertising bandwagon myself... ya know, after spending about $20 in every craft store in town, it makes more sense all the time.

Good luck to ya!

Nicolette @ Momnivore's Dilemma said...

Nope.

We all need to pay the bills, feed the mouths, and buy the lumber.

The logic is, anyone that works is selling out something, right?

I'm about to start diving in the ad world myself, but it helps that I worked in advertising for years...

As I am a bit older than you Mandi, may I offer some wisdom? I say, DO WHAT WORKS FOR YOU. We get all worried about what others think of us. I say go for 75 cents. You are worth it. And I didn't even notice the ad!! hugs, cathy

I don't see why not. If I had a blog I would get sponsors and I think all the blogs I read have sponsors, they made their blogging part of their business.

Emily said...

I've actually been wondering why you DON'T have ads. I mean, you've got this crazy following! Cash in, baby!

Spencer & Lorilyn Crum said...

Mandi, you have so much more grace than I do. This would have been my post title: "Deal With it or Shove It". That might also be why you're the only person who ever comments on my posts :)

What bother's me isn't when people have ads, but when they have it badly formatted into the rest of their blog.

But in my eyes you can do no wrong, so you could have your entire page just be adds and I would be like, "OMG Mandi is so brilliant I love her times inifity!"

Neckmeat said...

Not a sell-out, more of a progressive kind of gal. Changing with the times, adapting to the future. :) I love your blog & hope you can find more sponsors maybe a lumber yard or something? LOL

Pia said...

I can't say I care, because I can't even see the ad :-)
But i wouldn't care anyway.
I always start smiling when I see that you have posted something new!

ACW said...

Go for it! Keep an eye on what you advertise for though, you are essentially putting your name behind it. Wouldn't want to see ads for, let's say, a meat market on a vegetarian's food blog, for example.

WhettenWild said...

I say go for it!

I read all the time, but am just now commenting. I'm all for the ads. To me, the only time I "drop" a blog is when they start doing "sponsored" posts every day, that have nothing to do with their blog so that they can get freebie stuff. Love the blog, and love that you're going to try and make some money off of it. Best of luck!

murphyboysmom5 said...

Yeah, what they said!!! I love your blog, and I think you should definitely have sponsors! More lumber and supplies = more cool stuff for you to make = more inspiration for me :)You rock!

as amazingly talented as you are, I'm surprised advertisers aren't beating down your beautifully molded door to put their signs on your page! I say your work, time and awesomeness are worth it!

Bludart said...

Honestly, I'm so used to other blogs with crazy advertising on the sides, that I tune out blinky stuff anyway. Just, don't get those ads that automatically play sound!
