Yes, friends. I'm talking about the fugliest place in my house. I finally just, snapped.
I'm taking matters into my own hands. I've strapped on a set, and I've manned up.
What am I talking about? The eyesore of my entire abode. The armpit of my house:
the stairs.
Wait. Wait. Nuhnuhnuh-no no. Back up here. Backup backup backup (beep beep beep-- backup noise).
Allow me to correct myself. The armpit of my house is my carpet. The stairs aren't even that good. My stairs are the crotch.
With questionable hygiene.
And something must be done about this crotch.
I won't even show them to you. Make me.
Arrrr. Fine-nuh. Promise me you'll still like me after. Swear.
As I followed my tazmanian devil around the house, attempting to snap a non-smeary picture on a dark day of her Halloween costume, I got this one:

and I swore it would never see the light of day, the stairs are that bad.
Well, all that carpet is gone now. Twas a full afternoon of tearing, ripping, pulling, crowbarring, finger blisters, sweeping, gagging, and so forth.

There's no going back now, man. But would I want to?? I ASK YOU?

Can I ask for a candelight vigil? 'Cause I've plunged into work, and I'm not lovin' it so far.

I think I need a hug.

Are you freaking kidding me? Was this even in your plans today when I talked to you this morn?
You're amazing and they're going to look incredible. HUG.
Feel better?
BIG HUG!!! Feel better?
I'm so curious to see what the end result is going to be because I KNOW it'll be amazing.
You have a big hug from me! They are going to be fantastic! So hang in there!
Hugs

I did this to a set of stairs in my house, and I love it (although they are on a smaller scale since I only had to do 5 stairs on the way into my sewing studio.) the only advice I would give is add trim to the back and side of the stair where it meets the riser and the wall to close the gap that is there, (well was there on my stairs anyway) and to really, really, varnish them afterwards since the traffic on the stairs is going to be so high.
You might eventually want to look into a runner though with that many littles in the house. The last house we lived in we had all wood stairs, and no one could wear socks without killing themselves as they slipped down the stairs (I eventually went to Ikea and bought grip strips since a runner wasn't an option since it was military housing.) This isn't a problem in my studio since shoes are usually a good idea because I pulled the carpet out of there and epoxied the floor so it was more wipe-able, and I throw pins around willy nilly.
I LOVE your friend Mandy's comment above. I can relate to that. My sister would have said something like that from time to time. The "I can't take this one more moments!" ...has happened numerous times at my house!!! Make sure you show the results. Would love to see how it ends...
OMG...is McKenna's costume ANNIE? What a doll! The stairs look like they are going to be beautiful!!
(((((((HUG))))))) Point your paint brush towards the sky and think of handbags!
Hugs of inspiration coming your way! I feel the same way about carpet on stairs, well for that matter, anywhere. We did something similar on our stairs to the basement and love it. You will too!
Oh my goodness - she's going to be Annie for Halloween?! I never even would have noticed the carpet in that pic because of that maximum-level cuteness that is your daughter. Eeeeep!!!! But...good luck with the stairs anyway! Love the dark color so far!
I really want to do this with our stairs, too, but have not been brave enough to take the plunge. Can 't wait to see the results, it's looking fabulous so far!!! {hugs}
I only have two stairs to pull the carpet off of, but then I have to rebuild them because they are all a different height and they are both too tall and too shallow.
You've got my hugs, but better to get one from little miss cute bucket on your stairs.
Hang in there. Your projects always end up amazing.
Just when I thought you couldn't possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this............................ and totally redeem yourself.
well, i like it. so there you go. i know that's all the opinion you needed right?
they look way better....i want to do this in my kids room...hate the carpet. p.s. ur daughter is sooo sweet...love the outfit!
I just about lost it when you said "crotch".
I am 100% backing you on this project from 1000 miles away. Ugly stairs are HORRIBLE and I hope to redo mine in the future as well. In the meantime, I will live vicariously through your project. And ripping up carpeting? So gross to do, I applaud you.
My cat has destroyed the carpet on my stairs. But I'm a sock-in-the-wintertime-wearer with 2 young'ns and have been fearful of going all wood. Pretty sure the cat would just destroy a runner...
Is that just dark paint or is that a stain? How in the world do you keep it from dripping? I'm a messy painter!
It looks great! I hope it's worth it in the end for ya....it looks fab. And that is the perfect outfit for that cute girl!
Sending hugs. But Annie is super cute...so cute she takes the entire focus of the pictures! :)
Just remember the feeling you get AFTER you finish a project.
so worth it.
Youcandoit!
I am positive they will look amazing!! I already love them and they aren't even done yet!
Wow! You really know how to keep busy! Dang girl! Those stairs are going to ROCK! Now, don't get any splinters in your toes in the mean time!
Honestly, my stairs look worse. I guess that would make them the...what's worse than crotch? angus? That's what my son used to think it was called. I ripped up two stairs and stopped because I freaked out at what to do with them. I have the same style stairs with that little landing before the last couple. I'm hugging the will in you to finish so I can see what you do with them. Maybe it will make me finish mine.
Oh and McKenna is the cutest thing in that outfit. It's perfect for her. Nobody would notice the carpets in the picture if you hadn't pointed them out...she's just too cute.
Unbelievable undertaking!!! Crotch? You always bring a chuckle my way!
HUG...HUG....One more HUG...
Your girl is too flipping adorable. I love, LOVE her Annie costume! And about the stairs, I think they are already looking good. I know they'll be amazing when you're finished!!
Girl we are like twins separated at birth. They already look fantabulous!!! What you talking 'bout Willis?? I love em. A thousand times better than the carpet right???
That scrumptious redheaded baby girl can make anything look good though - she's so cute!
so... I read most of the comments....and I agree....you always pull out a winner in the end. Ive been contemplating this myself, so cant wait to see how yours turns out, yep that's right Im using you as a guinnea pig! BTW holy cow, I LOVE the trim AT AN ANGLE going up the stairs, your trim work always blows me away!
I also am waiting for the results because I also have worse stairs-two cats & cheap carpeting does that. I have to trim our carpet and have been wondering if I could do it. You'll have to give us instructions on preparing the stairs first...did you sand them? Are they plywood? Particle board? MDF? What kind of paint did you use? Primer?
You truely go first where many a girl want to go. (a skewered movie reference)
I couldn't pay any attention to the carpet because McKenna looks so dang cute in that costume!
The stairs will be great BTW
Wow! You've left me in suspense, dying to see the end product. More pictures, please.
that's what I've been thinking about doing to our stairs...could I tempt you in a trip to the vacation capital of the world, Lubbock Tx???
Beautiful! I saw Lisa @ Shine your Light's post and I had to come see how you inspired her...great job! I have done the batten and board but not the carpet yet.....thanks for the inspiration!
