Now I Just Need A Butler.

I wanna show you my floor. And I want you to know something, too:

I cleaned, just for you.

Mostly cleaned. Kinda cleaned. Like, threw everything out of that room as fast as I could cleaned.

And it was all for you. Frankly, my mud/laundry room is just a disaster. It's where the whole family takes a dump.

That didn't come out right.

But man, I love checkers. The game, and the look.

Wanna know how I did it? I assessed the square footage of the room, and then using a complicated mathematical formula of dividing the square footage with an even 12''x12'' ratio, I then used a laser level and chalk lined the entire room, beginning from the point of entry and working my way back to the outer wall.

Oooorrrr I just went the super duper lazy-A route. Yeah. That sounds more like me.

I used contact paper essentially as 12x12 squares of "blue tape", if you will.

'S a sloppy job. I'm not gonna lie. But I think it totally works with the "look" I'm going for in there.

I want it to say: "dump". And it totally does.

Actually though-- the contact paper does work awesome. It already comes as 12'' wide. Just cut yourself some pieces and start laying it out.

But take a tip from me: they start to fail when you use them overandoverandover (cough).

So now that I have my dreamed-about checkered floor, I feel like I need a cook. And a butler. Definitely a butler. And I will call him "Jeeves".

No. No. "Wadsworth".

"Indeed no, sir. I'm merely a humble butler."

"What exactly do you do?"

"I buttle, sir."

If you can name that quote, we were meant to be besties. I'd leave my husband for you.

I didn't mean it, Jeffrey. Also, um, hon-- I changed the floor, again. Hope you don't mind.

*Update*:  See what I think about plywood flooring HERE.

I stink at song lyrics and movie quotes, but wanna be your best friend anyway. :} When I was single I had a little duplex and I installed a black and white checked peel and stick floor. I loved it. In my future farmhouse I think I will have to have black and white checks again. They just make you smile. This is my favorite floor yet. Love the contact paper idea. You is smart.

PS That last sentence was a movie quoted by the way.

"I am pea green with envy" at your mudroom, and, awesome floor. I had to google your movie -- clue -- and now I am going to have to watch that movie...and plan me a mud room. My family walks through the back door all the way through to the front hall and "takes a dump" there.

Thanks for sharing the fun!

LOVE the floor. Nicely done. I wish I had a place in my house where I could do such a cool thing! Alas, woe is me, I do not. Boo.

I love Clue too! My husband put the quote from the end (one of them) on his computer as it shuts down. "Now I'm going home to sleep with my wife." It's funny. I love your floor!

I totally love this... Last week I had it with the horrible carpet in the hallway but don't wantto put down new flooring during snow, slush, muck season... Whichin Maine is quickly followed by MUD season... I just hastly painted the floor boards black until late spring, but really think it looks blah... I am going to be a total copy cat... Black and white squares are now part of my weekend agenda.

Mandi,Love this!! I think it would rock over my "lovely forest green linoleum" that I have hated for 9 long years(in my laundry room)!!! Quick question, would you do anything different like pre-paint the wood before installing? And do you regret not taking off the baseboard? How did you nail it? One last question, what type of paint?? hugs, cathy

It looks fab, and the contact paper is a brilliant idea! I have a dresser I want to redo that I spray-painted gloss black long before I ever knew anything about proper furniture redoing (that isn't a proper sentence, but you get the point...) It would be cool to use contact paper to mask parts, and then paint the rest...hmmm...you've got me thinking!

LOVE it!! Clue, Tim Curry!! I watch it in my sewing room about twice, or twenty times at a time!

I did black and white tiled vinyl in my mud room. A poor colour choice, the white... Love your floor. I have this crazy idea that I'll remove filthy carpets and paint the underfloor in our living room... Huge room. Maybe one day!

Thanks for the great post. I'm a new follower!

Ummm, love the floor, & your "shortcut" design tricks! Our house is one tent away from a full blown circus! Seriously... Our 5 kids make it their jobs to take a "dump" anywhere they go... Lol! Any shortcuts on how to nip that would be greatly appreciated! I'm a new follower, & will visit often ;-)

L-O-V-E that movie.

Great idea for your floor...now I must find a place in my house to copy it...

Best. Movie. Ever.

And the floor looks great. Want to try that in my living room, only with stain and a few coats of poly.

I just love painted floors, especially when they are as lovely as this. I have been contemplating on painting the flooring Houston of one of the guest rooms just to make an impression. I might have to research quite a bit more, but I am hopeful that it would look great! Thanks for this inspiring share!
