Call this today's pet peeve, if you will, but seriously, what is wrong with people? Have you ever read the comments after a youtube video? Or the blog comments after a news article? Have you seen a one that hasn't gotten heated and ugly?
Even the simplest, most non-controversial of video's, statements, and articles create serious contention. I'll show you what I mean in a second. But first, why?
Are people really bored? Do people think they can get away with saying whatever they want because there's a certain level of anonymity? Are we more contentious nowadays? Or is it all of the above?
Whatever it is, it's totally annoying.
Let's start with youtube, shall we? Let's pick a video at random. Rest assured, I won't have to flip through the comments to find a nasty, ugly comment directed at someone else.
Okay, the Coconut Carrying Octopus. This should be a completely harmless video, right?
Comments not too far down the page:
"@oldmcdonough You're a TOOL and your parents USED to molest you. "
"whatever duude "
"haha what a retard "
And the cream of the crop:
"this is not tool use, this is being camera shy. now leave the f---- thing alone and it will stop hiding inside coconuts."
The F word was sooo needed there. Don't you think?
Okay, now I'm going to pick a seemingly harmless news article off the MSNBC home page:
Using Phone While Walking Perilous For Seniors.
And here we go with the weird comments:
"Ya and people who dry their hair with an electric dryer while doing the dishes are more likely to get electricuted. So what! They're all stupid. "
"Being old is perilous for seniors. Hey, let's pass a law, that way we can fine their a-- when we catch them walking around talking on their phones and it will help pay for Medicare. "
oh yeah, NO @!$%# SHERLOCK!"
Do people sit around at work talking like this? Or do just trashy people leave comments?
